Using Outlook 2003 to read Lotus Notes Email
I suspect this post has a very small audience, although I suspect that goes for the blog as a whole. Anyway, what follows is a step by step instruction for using Outlook 2003 to read your Lotus Notes email.
h3. Assumptions
This has been tested and works for Windows XP, Lotus Notes 6.5.4 (although the MS bridge should work for Release 5 and up), using Outlook 2003.
h3. Download the Microsoft Conntector
It’s “available for free(Microsoft.com - Outlook 2003/2002 Add-in Notes Connector)”:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=8EBBBA59-5F17-4E52-8980-C4F0DFA92D65&displaylang=en from Microsoft. It states it works for Outlook 2002 and 2003, for use with Notes release 5 or 6.
h3. Uninstall Microsoft hotfixes
It seems that Outlook 2003 security fix “KB892843”:http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1D156043-B041-4305-8442-3C4E3B832788&displaylang=en stops the connector from installing properly. Unless you remove it, you’ll get the error @”Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The server is not available.
Contact your administrator if this condition persists@. This hotfix is also included in some roll-up fixes, so I suggest you remove any and all Outlook related hotfixes. These hotfixes only affect the installation of the connector, so you can re-run Windows Update afterwards.
You can remove hotfixes from the Add/Remove program dialog - just make sure you have the @Show Updates@ checkbox ticked. The Outlook hotfixes will be listed under Microsoft Office.
h3. Install the connector
Shut down both Notes and Outlook. Double click the connector and follow the on screen instructions
h3. Set up Outlook to read your notes email
Start Outlook up. Select @E-Mail Accounts…@ from the @Tools@ menu. Select @Add a new email account@, click @next@, and select @Additional Server Types@ and click @next@ again. Depending on your configuration, you’ll be presented with several server type options. We want @Microsoft Offie Outlook Connector for IBM Lotus Notes Domino@. Click @next@. You’ll now be prompted to exit Outlook before the new account will be active.
Outlook should pick up your notes file automatically.
h3. Re-install the Oulook Hotfixes
As you wouldn’t want to forget that, would you :-)
Anyway, that should be it. You’ll now have a slightly more usable way of accessing and sending you email, as well as working with calendars and your todo list. Note that you’ll be unable to read all notes email - those sent with high encruption levels (the ones you can’t send to non-notes email accounts and that can’t be forwared) will not show up, but you should get told that they can’t be transfered by the connector.

Thank you VERY much for this article. My office uses Lotus Notes exclusively. Lotus Notes is great, however - the e-mail client is pitaful

I’ve been using connector for years now. As of last week it quit working. Unable to open folders, blah blah is the error and zero updates have been made since install of Office 2003. I went as far as uninstalling all three pieces, Office, connector, and notes. still no glory. Any Ideas?
May 9th, 2006 at 1:03 pm
Updates will show up in two places - are you sure you’re looking at the updates displayed under office 2003 itself, rather than the generic windows updates?
May 12th, 2006 at 2:29 pm
Fantastic, thanks! The rolled up Outlook update will look like “OUTLOOKff…” in you Add or Remove Programs window. Also, if you start Outlook before fixing this and get the error, just go to Control Panel, make a new mail file, set it as default and restart Outlook. After that you can start from the top.

Thanks for this. Works a treat!

Hi
I am having a similar problem.
Building a new machine - loaded XP with SP2 included & Office 2003. Loaded all the updates, then the connector & cannot open the Outlook folder.
Removed all updates for Office except SP2 & KB907417 which cannot be uninstalled.
Reloaded the connector, which asks for a Notes password as expected.
Whan Outlook opens I get a message specifying the Domino configuration, then a message that the Connector is not the default e-mail account & then Outlook continues as normal.
However, I still cannot open the connector folder
Any suggestions as I am baffled??????????

Hi,
I am having the exact problem that Alan has described above when I try to access my Notes Mail database using Outlook.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
May 28th, 2006 at 11:32 pm
I have been able to resolve the problem by removing all email accounts from the profile, setting up the connector & ensuring that the connector is working. Once this was working, I recreated the POP3 accounts that I had previously & then reloaded the Office updates.
A question that I now have is - should the Notes mail automatically be moved to the Personal folder, if that is specified as the delivery mail box, in the same way as it can be setup to do when there is an Exchange server & a Personal folder?
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Well I am not able to open Microsoft Office as initially I had configured the Mail account directly by specifying the Domino server name(before installing the connector) but Outlook gave me and still gives me an error and shuts down and thus I am not able to access the ooptions to use the connector. How do i remove these settings to revert back to the original Outlook configuration? please help!
June 5th, 2006 at 9:45 am
Dude,
Your article saved my butt. I had just reinstalled the OS and gotten all the dang updates (incl. Office 2003) but couldn’t get the Connector going. Removed the Outlook updates as you suggested and finally it worked. Thanks!
June 5th, 2006 at 5:50 pm
Kamal,
You should be able to uninstall the connector easily enough from the add/remove programs option under the control panel.
June 8th, 2006 at 9:05 pm
You’re a f*ckin’ genius! I just got my laptop back after a corporate re-build. After 2 years of using the Connector it gave me this exact error. Our IT group will not support anything outside of a std Notes install so I was hosed for 2 days. Thanks to you, I’m up and running.

I have a different problem. My Outlook Connector works perfectly, but other email does not. When I’m not connected by my VPN to the Notes server (VPN is down), I cannot send email via my Comcast account. Interestingly, I can get email from the same Comcast account. The only odd thing I’ve noticed is that even though I select Comcast account as to be used when sending the email, the email itself ends up in the Domino “Outbox”. Any ideas as to what might be going on? And - Thanks in advance for any help you might provide!
June 12th, 2006 at 9:50 pm
I have done everything you have suggested. I seem to have a different problem. When outlook trys to make the connection to the notes server it says someone is already using my file - I assume that means my message file. I am stumped and now completely desperate.
June 12th, 2006 at 9:51 pm
this pertain to a message that said my local message file.
June 12th, 2006 at 9:56 pm
thanks so much! I was going nuts trying to make my Notes connector work. Your the Best.
June 13th, 2006 at 12:44 am
A question – can the Notes mail automatically be delivered to my Personal folder inbox if it is specified as the delivery mail box, in the same way as it can be setup to do when there is an Exchange server & a Personal folder?

Thanks for the tip…though some corrections might be in order based on my experience in making my Outlook connector for Domino in Outlook 2003 work again on my XP-SP2 (It was down for last few months ever since I got the Outlook updates from MS site via automatic updates)
Firstly, after I removed the 3 patches related to Outlook, my Outlook was crashing on start-up, had to use the “repair” option of Microsoft Office installation to fix that. Secondly, I don’t think I can run the patches again as they will again block its working. One just have to live without those MS patches.
June 22nd, 2006 at 3:18 pm
HG, I have the same setup and I was certainly able to reapply the patches - I’m fully up to date (Office 2003, XP SP 2) and the connnector is still working.
June 22nd, 2006 at 6:48 pm
Thank You!!
Worked like a charm!
June 23rd, 2006 at 7:14 am
Thanks you so much for the info. Our work uses Notes and it is the worst mail client ever made. It gives me no end of frustration and I had been unable to get the connector working until I found your blog saying to remove the Outlook patches, and it all worked a treat!!
June 26th, 2006 at 10:04 am
Really big “Thank You” …
June 29th, 2006 at 12:12 am
I have the exact same error message (default folders not found). I do not, however, have any outlook hotfixes, only windows hotfixes. Have been forced to use notes for 3 months now, and need help!
June 29th, 2006 at 2:41 pm
Excellent - removing the Outlook update and re-installing the connector fixed it. Well done.
June 29th, 2006 at 3:07 pm
One problem - none of the Lotus Notes folders appear in the Outlook view. I had this working previously before I rebuilt my laptop and don’t know what I have done differently.
There’s a few people out there with this issue - can anyone assist thanks?
June 29th, 2006 at 3:39 pm
Finally- After two weeks and reading your blog it finally WORKS!!!

Thanks so much for all this VERY helpful information. Finally it works!

[…] Thanks goes to the Magpiebrain’s guide Using Outlook 2003 to read Lotus Notes email. It helped me get started on installing the Notes Connector, when I was having problems with it. […]
July 4th, 2006 at 4:10 pm
The problem, for me, is only during configuration: setup ok, configuration seems ok but is bad. I removed the KB913807. So it works.
Thank you
July 5th, 2006 at 8:33 am
So no-one else has had the problem where the Notes folders are missing? I can’t use the outlook connector as I need the folders. I’ve gone back to the horrible Notes client for now.
July 6th, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Hi,
I am also facing the same error while trying to open Outlook. But I don’t have Outlook 2003 security fix KB892843
installed in my pc. How to fix this error.

Hi All:
I need to access “four Lotus Notes email files” but do not have Lotus Notes and don’t need it. Is there any easy way to access these files … should I do the whole rigamarole of setting up Outlook?
I don’t need to access a server, don’t need to download anything … I just need to view four Lotus Notes email files which are contained on a DVD.
Any advice would be most appreciated … THANK YOU!!!!
July 7th, 2006 at 8:25 pm
Thanks! That worked great.
Another thank you to Brian above who’s tip fixed my issue! :)

Help…I had the connector working fine on my old laptop using Outlook 2002 and Lotus Notes V6. My new laptop came with Outlook 2003 and Lotus Notes V7. I do not have the Outlook 2003 security fix KB892843 installed. The connector installed fine, configured fine, but when I try to open the folders, I get a pop up error “folders could not be opened, server not available”..
Any suggestions. Also is anyone using connector with Notes V7. Thanks in advance.
July 11th, 2006 at 4:44 pm
Hi, my outlook connector had been working satisfactoriliy until a few days ago. It sync all emails except calender appointments. Is there any thing I needs to do to get that working again ?
Thanks for your help.
July 11th, 2006 at 7:54 pm
Any idea when will a connector Notes 7 be released? Every since my company has migrated to Notes 7, my outlook has been crashing after 10 - 15 mins of use. I suspect its because the original connector has been designed only for R5/6
thanks

Why you would want to use the limited Microsoft tool when Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook is available and supports encryption as well as everything esle I don’t know.
I understand that it is not directly downloadable, however it should be free to your company and they should be able to get it for you.
Otherwise you can web register free here: https://www6.software.ibm.com/reg/sdlcom/getid-r?
Then download here: http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/download/search.jsp?q=Domino+Access&rs=ESD-NTSDOMTRL
Then you can start using Outlook to drive your Notes mail file without the limitations of the microsoft connector.
OK you will still be running Notes software in the background, but the objective is to use the nicer client isn’t it? I can’t see not being able to read encrypted messages as being very friendly in a Notes environment where encrypting your mail is as easy as breathing. But then you never can tell.

NeIT Wrote:

Several people in my company tried it - they found it to be more buggy and memory hungry than the MS connector. Many of our users also reported being unable to uninstall it. As for encryption, very few people use notes for this any more (as people’s email traffic is by and large mostly external to the company). Most people use notes because they have no other choice.

Thank for suggest of NeiIT, back last 2 months I has outlook connector to Lotus Notes yet it OK for me. But I has problem after IT dept have changed my mailbox from the old server to new one server it not work. I’m try to repair more time it still can’t work then after install tool from IBM my outlook come back again that find for me. Thank everyone for better suggestion.
July 26th, 2006 at 1:53 pm
I’ve tried all of the above suggestions and still get the error when I try to open the Connector folder ” The set of folders could not be oopened. The server is not available…..”. I don’t have any Outlook security fixes that I can see. Lots of Windows updates but none of the numbers listed on this blog. Any suggestions?????
July 27th, 2006 at 9:03 pm
Hi all,
great blog.
i have a problem with some attachments. i always get a message saying ‘the attachment can’t be downloaded from the server…..’. I know there is a workaround then by downloading the attachment via notes webmail, but as you can imagine that is hardly workable.
Has anyone had the same issue - and happen to know what the rootcause is/how to solve it.
all suggestions are very welcome!!

It works!! This site should be given a gold star. In order to get the folder to open this is what I had to do.
I had installed the connector and then uninstalled the hotfixes. Still couldn’t open up the folder. So as Alan mentioned above, I deleted the email account (connector) and still wouldn’t work. Soooo. I uninstalled the connector (again). I then realized that in the Document & Settings/User/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook there was a file that had been created by Notes when I first tried to install the Connector. It brought over the data but was not being read by Outlook. So I moved the file (didn’t want to delete it right away), installed Connector again, set up the e-mail account as Sam explains, and Voila…..it brought over the files and works like a charm. I than ran the updates for windows and it still works!!
I would like to know as Alan asked on 6-13-06, if I can make the default folder for receiving emails the personal folders instead of the Connector folder. I don’t want to try it in case it screws something up.
Julie - try what I did and see if the folders come in. I was having the same problem until I deleted the file in the Outlook folder and reinstalled. Good luck and thanks Sam for making this available.
July 29th, 2006 at 11:47 pm
Sandi - thanks very much for posting the workarounds. I really should get around to updating this post with all the useful information that’s been left in the comments.
August 8th, 2006 at 8:25 am
I have failed to get this working, despite resorting to uninstalling the connector, completely uninstalling Office 2003 then re-installing Office and the connector.
The connector picks up my server location and displays it in a greyed out box - asks for my password but fails to connect to mail error shows “set of folders is not available”
I am running Notes 6.5 on this XP box

Has anyone tried or does anyone know whether the connector will work with Outlook 2007???
I would like to load the software but do not want to lose the current functionality
August 15th, 2006 at 2:42 am
Alan,
Did some checking on the MS website and it looks like the connector DOES NOT work with Outlook 2007.(Some have tried and had no success) . I have a link here that gives some information on the new exchange. I’m not sure of all the ramifications but this might help some. In the meantime, your best bet is to stick with what works now! Happy e-mailing.

Many many thanks!
My company also uses Lotus Notes which has the world’s least intuitive user interface. I could not get Outlook Connector to work until I found your blog with its advice. Corporate IT disavowed itself of the problem.
I had reinstalled Office and Notes to no avail. I followed your directions and now I can use Outlook again!

We have the connector running great, but here is the problem: The Out Of Office assisant is only available on some of the machines! Why would that be? I have followed M$ suggestions but nothing will make it show up on the Tools menu. Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks

Hello,
I have Outlook 2003 with Connector for Lotus on WInXP
Everything was OK for years…. But yestarday I changed something :-) and now i have problem.
Problem is - i cannot channged default delivery location back for personal folder. After changing , and restarting Outlook - it is back “Domino Connector” . :(
What I change: I’m not sure ;). I enbaled some desabled add-is in Outlook. It was some part of Conector I think (but it works fine without it).
Help.What to do?
August 24th, 2006 at 5:25 am
I have a good working Outlook 2003 w/Notes Connector. My problem is that it takes forever to load. Does anyone know how to adjust the synchronization settings with my Notes server?
Everytime I open Outlook it takes me about 20 minutes before I can use it. Outlook redownloads all my Tasks, all my Calendar appts, my Sent file headers, my Deleted files headers (usually pretty minimal), all my Inbox and folder headers and then the new full emails. I work from home and have a pretty decent DSL connection but I don’t know why it doesn’t store these locally and just synchornize. My nsf file is stored on my computer and I have the full Notes client installed.
One of the reasons I hate Notes is because when I read an email with an attachment it downloads the file, then if I edit, forward or reply to the message it downloads the file and, finally, I send my email it uploads the file. It takes forever. So Outlook is kind of a compromise. I get all my useless time out of the way during startup and then don’t have these headaches while I’m working.
If anyone is experiencing the same problem and has any solutions, your advice would be greatly appreciated.
August 24th, 2006 at 4:26 pm
Excellent Post!
MilkyMagic - I have the same problem. Using a new profile I can connect to the Domino Server, but the folder list doesn’t populate. I can send email but not view any items.
The strange thing is, if I create a new Windows XP account and use the same notes .id file, same account, it will populate the folder list. I have tried copying the resulting .nst file to my old - that lets me see the messages in it, but not any of the new messages. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. If I find a solution to the problem I will post it here.

Here is a tough question: If your domino server doesn’t allow you to keep your address book on the server, how do you synch the Outlook Contacts?
August 30th, 2006 at 7:51 pm
What do you do when the remove programs does not show or have a check box to show updates in Windows 2000? I can’t find a way to remove Outlook 2003 security fix KB892843 from my computer.
September 1st, 2006 at 10:05 am
Will, Are you sure you have it installed in teh first place? If you can see it on the ‘Add/Remove Programs’ window you should be able to select it and try and remove it.
Mind you, you do have Windows 2000 and these instructions are for Windows XP - but a quick google turned this up: http://tinyurl.com/k39zp which implies you should be able to remove them using the Add/Remove programs window.
Are you logged on as an Admin?

Guys,
Well done on the information, I had the problem with the outlook connector but once I removed the Outlook updates it was fine.
Thanks,

Sam, yes it is installed. I know this because I tried to re-install this KB Hot Fix to to ensure it was installed. My computer came be back saying that it was already on my computer.
In the Add/Remove Programs window there is not KB###### for me to uninstall. Any other thoughts?
September 1st, 2006 at 9:13 pm
Killing off the Outlook patches made it work perfectly. Thank you from a group of people about to commit seppukku, faced with the torture of using Notes for email.
September 2nd, 2006 at 8:24 pm
Thanks to all of you for provinding the help to get the connector working.
About the Outlook update to remove: I also did not have that particular update listed and could not get it working. as a last resort, I uninstalled all Outlook updates listed in the Add/Remove programs box and even all updates that applied to the complete product (office that is). Just to be absolutely sure everything was gone, I also ran a regclean to get rid of the last references.
Everything is now working fine, except for my “Out of the Office” and my local address book which cannot be found (-;
September 5th, 2006 at 11:57 am
I had the same problem, no update installed but same error message from outlook.
The solution is very simple (once you address it): Make sure that Notes.ini is in your PATH.
Yes, you know, the environment variable PATH must have “c:\Program Files\Lotus\Notes”…
Hope this helps

I have similar problem as Ducks9 submitted on 8.24.06 @ 5 AM. everything works but it is VERY slow. it takes almost an hour to send one email while it sits in the outbox thinking what to do with it. any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
September 20th, 2006 at 2:54 pm
As “Ducks 9”, I experience same problem - after rebooting machine, Outlook takes 20-30 minutes while it checks/downloads all Calendar and folder contents. Also keeps mail in outbox intermittently and refuses to send until reboot and relaunch - Any solutions most appreciated!
September 22nd, 2006 at 7:22 pm
I have seen many posts about missing notes email folders. The user created mail folders don’t come over/can’t be seen/are missing. Only the default domino folders (inbox, sent, drafts, junk, outbox) are there. Anyone have a fix for this yet? Thanks
September 26th, 2006 at 5:26 am
Gary - create folders with the same name (and structure) in the Outlook, and it should work. Same problem is in Notes archiving - folders other than deault ones are not archived unless they exist in the archive.

Will- you need an update to Windows Installer to get the ‘Show Updates’ box.
Did anyone ever get Outlook 2003 to work with Notes 7? I had this working with O2K3 & Notes 6.5, got a new laptop with Notes 7, I get the ‘Unable to open default e-mail folders…’ message and this is driving me nuts!
September 27th, 2006 at 12:49 am
Well, you can definitely add me to the many people that gave you thanks for helping with your timely advice.
Uninstalled the Outlook hotfixes as you suggested and the connector worked!
Thank you for saving me from the notes client!
Take care

Hello Everyone,
I went through the posts but did not come across the dilemma that I am faced with. So plz help me out.
My company had lotus notes and I was using the connector and all things were…..until they took my laptop to replatform and bingo….now there is no Outlook installed….and no Admin rights too.
So now i have this huge .nst file that i think is the old mail file. I have my other laptop that has Outlook. How do I open this .nst file in Outlook on this other laptop???
This is worth 18 monthsof mail and i just cannot see them sitting there wasted. Helpppp……..
September 28th, 2006 at 12:07 am
I have the same question as Ian had: does it work with Notes 7?
I have installed-reinstalled connector several times in the past two weeks. It works 2-3 days and then it stops working. And sometimes it corrups the notes server mail file/settings, and Lotus notes also cannot receive the mails. I have to call administrator to fix it.
September 29th, 2006 at 7:13 am
I got it working.. Thanks for the tip.
Only problem is that I am unable to apply any rules on outlook. I want to have a copy of every outgoing message in my Inbox. As soon I click on Rules and Alerts menu the window appears and disappears immediately.
Work around is to manually copy from sent items and paste in Inbox or have your email ID in the CC list but it is tedious.
Any solutions to this? Thanks.

I have been using outlook connector for lotus notes and it was working great until one day I couldn’t use it anymore, I un-install and reinstall office because by Microsoft it was do to office sp2, now after I got it working again I noticed that the folders I had in notes separate from the inbox folder are not synchronizing or not been transfer like it use to be before crashed on me.
Any idea why the folders are not synchronizing anymore?
Thanks

For the guys asking about the folders created that are not the default folders created by the outlook connector I have found out a solution for that problem.
Jut go to control panel, mail and delete the existing profile after that is done create another and set it up…make sure that you rename the outlook file and that the profile is not named like the previews one.
I did this and when I went to outlook I saw them been recreated automatically.
Good luck
Feel free to email me if you any of you need any clarification on this post

Thanks a lot for the help. Great stuff.
October 6th, 2006 at 8:12 pm
thanks for the help and the info. i had the problem even tho i uninstalled the hotfix. it seems like that the root of the problem stems from the fact that when it asked me about the type of folder i wanted to use (no encryption, compress and encrypted, highly encrypted… or something to that affect), i had problems when i picked an encrypted option. when i selected no encryption, i had no problems. so, you can always try going back to your control panel, deleting the profile that you’ve set up ,and go through the process again but selecting no encryption. hope this helps.
October 10th, 2006 at 12:35 am
I can install and setup the Outlook Domino Connector (delete updates, clear profile, etc.). I can login to my Notes account, but I see no messages in my inbox. I know I’m logged in because it will allow me to send email, I just can’t receive it. Any suggestions?

Tim - I sounds like you are looking in Notes for your e-mails. Do you have Outlook installed? If everything is working correctly, your e-mails should be coming into your Outlook. Open up Outlook (not Notes) and look for your received e-mails there.
October 10th, 2006 at 2:49 pm
Sandi - After your response, I realize my initial message was not clear. I can login to the Domino server using Outlook, which confirms my access to the account. I can also send messages using Outlook. But I don’t see any messages or custom folders in the Outlook inbox.
October 10th, 2006 at 4:43 pm
Hi Tim,
The reason you are not seeing your custom folders is because of your outlook profile, if you delete the outlook profile and recreate it with a different name the custom folder will populate.
Read my comments on 10.03.2006 at 10:00 pm
For the guys asking about the folders created that are not the default folders created by the outlook connector I have found out a solution for that problem.
Jut go to control panel, mail and delete the existing profile after that is done create another and set it up…make sure that you rename the outlook file and that the profile is not named like the previews one.
I did this and when I went to outlook I saw them been recreated automatically.

FOLDERS - domino folders not showing up in Outlook
-Thanks Sandi-
exit Outlook
delete or move the files in C:\Documents and Settings\your login profile\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
restart outlook
the resync will grab al your domino created folders and populate them in Oultook. (it’ll recreate the .Dat, .Nst, .pst files)
xp sp2, outlook 2003, olconn2, domino 6.?

ooopps, meant to say…
Thanks, Sandi ! from 7-28 above.

Tried again - Removed Domino connector, removed outlook updates, removed profile, reinstalled connector, created new profile. Still can’t see messages from the Outlook inbox, or custom folders. Yet I can login and send email. Very strange. Is there a way to force the resync?
October 11th, 2006 at 1:25 am
Everytime I start Outlook I have to wait at least 20 mins. while the system downloads every message header, calendar entries, new messages etc. Is there any way of stopping this or setting it to happen in the background?

Is there any way to get the outlook connector to work with Lotus Notes 7?
October 13th, 2006 at 5:57 am
Hi, I’m trying to access Lotus Notes emails from Outlook 2003, using the Notes Connector.
I’m using the connector wizard to set up my account. When trying to connect to mail server, i get error message that: “Unable to open you default mail folders. The server is not available.” But i can access my mail account thru Lotus Notes.
Kindly help.
October 13th, 2006 at 8:41 am
ok, i understand that i have to remove the Outlook 2003 security fix KB892843 first and then install the connector. Now my problem is i cannot located in Add/Remove programs this hotfix. So how to uninstall the same?
October 13th, 2006 at 8:56 am
Jayanta, it is possible that the hotfix was included in a rollup fix - so I’d suggest that you remove all Office-related hotfixes, install the connector then re-install hotfixes.
Also check the rest of the comments for more help…

I am having an interesting issue with the connector. It installs OK, and starts up OK, and even starts synchronizing. But… after about 5 minutes, Outlook just up and dies with no message at all.
I posted about this issue (http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlook/browse_frm/thread/4c5a0b14bfcf2394?lnk=igtc) but haven’t had any responses.
Any thoughts from this group?
Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the article… I didn’t find the update KB892843, but I just removed all the updates that pretend to the outlook and reinstalled the connector. It started to work without any problems at all… Thank you again.
October 23rd, 2006 at 10:10 pm
First of all, thank you very much for this information. I was having trouble getting it work since others in the office had it working fine but wouldn’t work for me. I did not have the specific KB you mentioned but I uninstalled the 3 outlook related updates and then it worked perfectly. I then reapplied the updates and am good to go.
However, a minor glitch, anytime I get an attachment it won’t let me save it, why is that? anyone know how to get the darn thing to download EVERYTHING and in full and then allow me to save the attachment without having to open Lotus to do it? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

hello
I use connector from outlook 2003 to Lotus 5, it works (synchronization okay and folders okay, even calendar and task).
But sometimes, from time to time, some mails are blank (or empty). it seems outlook deletes the mail content (the subject isent deleted) when they reach the income folder. When i check using the notes clients, the mail content is also deleted, which make me think that Outlook detelets the content on both the client (the nst file) and the server.
Any idea that should help me ??? THANKS
October 25th, 2006 at 1:42 pm
Chemin,
I don’t think the content is being deleted by Outlook. I get ‘spam’ emails from time to time that have my address and a subject line but there is nothing in the body of the email. If the email is coming from someone you know, have them resend it with a different subject line and see if works.
October 26th, 2006 at 7:34 am
Hi out there in Notes-hating-Outlook-loving land. If your Notes administrator ever moves your account, you need to
1. Remove your mail profile
2. Remove the KB913807 hotfix
3. Recreate your mail profile, point to the .id file and it should pick up the new server
4. Open Outlook, it should open the folders ok.
5. If you’re like me, the hotfix will be pushed back to you
I did a bit of mucking around to get this working, so during the process I also cleared the Outlook directories like C:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and C:\Documents and Settings\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook but I’m not sure that this was required.
October 26th, 2006 at 10:44 pm
Outstanding! This was a great post. I was having the server error, but after uninstalling the connector, removing all Outlook (not office) updates, blasting away the cached profiles in the Document & Settings/[User]/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook, reinstalling the connector… it works like a champ.
Thanks again!
November 2nd, 2006 at 3:56 am
I worked out my problem with the connector. Things I did :- 1. Remove the Lotus Notes mail profile
2. Uninstall the Lotus Notes connector
3. Remove the KB913807 hotfix
4. Remove the Junkmail hotfix
5. Reinstall the Lotus Notes connector
6. When prompted for name and company name - ENSURE you type in the same name you used in your Lotus Notes
7. Run Outlook and create the mail profile
8. Shutdown Outlook and relaunch it and you should see the folder with your name next to it!

Hi,
Outlook Notes Connector is a great software. It ‘s running quite good in my IBM T41.
But installing it on a colleagues T40 it will not work. After removal of all Outlook related Fixes and installation of the connector software I am not able to select the apporpriate connector “driver” when creating a new mailbox for a new outlook profile. Unter “additional server types” the “MS Office Outlook Connector for IBM Lotus Domino” will not show up at my colleagues machine. Only the Lotus Notes Mail “driver” is available.
Anyone has any kind of idea what could be the problem? Anyone ever had this kind of issue?
We already created a new profile, reinstalled the fixes.
Thanks in advance.

I don’t even want to upgrade unless I have it!
November 16th, 2006 at 6:56 pm
still waiting for a version of the Outlook connector that will work with Notes 7 - anybody?
November 19th, 2006 at 9:17 am
I’m using the connector with Lotus Notes 7 without a problem. Did have to do the delete profile and recreate new one and removing the hotfixes. My biggest problem is how long the replications are and not being able to access the server email address book when I’m not online!
November 19th, 2006 at 1:45 pm
Thats using connector with Lotus 7 and Office 2003? or 2007
… still in search of a connector for 2007
November 21st, 2006 at 8:37 pm
In Outlook 2007, you can add an account setting to connect with Notes, but you cannot configure it (it keeps giving you the same error (0x8004011c)). I don’t know if this is “by design” or not. It seems that you won’t be needing a specific connector with outlook 2007, but it seems also that it is not fully developed yet.
I’ll keep trying and will post any god news
November 22nd, 2006 at 1:56 am
I read somewhere else that this connector:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AA0AD3B0-E1A4-4990-A2BE-DDE78FED0709&displaylang=en
helps, but only if you go from Office 2003 to Office 2007
Havent had time to ruin my laptop yet………. needed it for work

Hi I really need help here. How do I get Outlook to synchronise with my LOCAL notes database, not the server version???
November 22nd, 2006 at 7:44 pm
This fix rocks! All working now, thanks!
November 22nd, 2006 at 9:31 pm
What did it fix for you?
November 23rd, 2006 at 12:19 am
Mark, the link is to a connector allowing management of Windows live Mail & the like. Unfortunately not what we need. I am not sure that we will even see an update to the connector. Read somewhere that there was not even an ‘if’ it is updated nevermind a ‘when’ it is likely to be done. Hopefully this is incorrect.
November 28th, 2006 at 5:34 pm
I was able to get the connector working again with Lotus Notes 7. I removed the email account from Outlook and readded it. Everything is working again!
November 28th, 2006 at 6:49 pm
Company just upgraded me to Office 2003 so the hotfixes are ‘packaged’ and cannot be deleleted and re-installed. So I cannot get the connector to work. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mark
November 28th, 2006 at 7:38 pm
OK, I see lots of great comments, but what I am looking for is the step by step to install the connector to work with a Lotus Notes 7 client - this is my work PC and I cannot afford to make a mistake and possible disable my e-mail functionality. Can someone post this, or would you mind if I contacted you directly for phone assistance on this?
Thanks in advance for considering this…

Do you guys know, if this connector can open the lotus notes archive file?
December 19th, 2006 at 5:08 pm
I was recently laid off from work. I cleared out my Lotus mail folder, except for my personal mail, and then I saved my Lotus folder. Is there a way that I can open and view my Lotus mail in Outlook? If not Outlook, is there any way that I can just open and view my old mail?
I’ve installed the “Outlook Connector for Domino”, but from what I see so far, I also have to have Lotus installed and access to a Lotus database, of which I have neither.
I’ve seen, above, several people asking this same question. But if there were any responses then I’ve missed them. If it is NOT possible then please respond to this too.
Thanks,
Andrew

Andrew: You can try installing Domino Server trial version and Lotus notes client. If that is not possible you can convert your mails to outlook using a conversion program transend migrator (www.transend.com). There are others too but this one costs least ($50) and does a good job.

Thanks. I’ll give the trail version a try and see what happens. I’ll post back here with the results. (But it will be a week or two. The holidays are going to be really busy.)

Been using the connector successfully for about two years. I have noticed now that my .nst file is over 2GB. However, when I look at the folder size in Outlook, the InBox, which is all I have, is only about 400K. How can I reduce the size of this file? When I do an Outlook “Compact File”, nothing really happens.
I’ve deleted the file, and allowed Outlook to rebuild it next time, but then Outlook runs for awhile and mysteriously terminates.
Someone give me a nice Christmas present :-)
Oh… Outlook 20003 and Notes 6.5

For those of you wondering about the link posted by Mark about a connector that is supposed to work with Outlook 2007, you can put your mind to rest, the connector is only for MSN Premium Subscribers. It doesn’t have anything to do with LotusNotes.
Since I was busy with re-install of my laptop, I installed from the posted link. As I suspected, it was just for MSN users. So don’t bother if you are not an MSN subscriber.
Please anyone, post any information regarding Outlook 2007 Connector for Domino in this blog. Thanks All.

Hi,
firstly what a great source of information, I’m hoping that someone can shed some light onto the problems I’m having.
Firstly I have follwed the guidance above and configured the connector and outlook and when started everything looks ok. an .NSF file is created and I can see all my notes mail and folders.
Now.
I have 2 issues
1 when I send a mail the it just sits in the outbox and never goes.
2 if I restart Outlook it terminated with the following
NSD is running.
Saving to C:\Program files\lotus\notes\data\XXXXXXXXXX.log
This file may be used by your company’s help desk and IBM to determine the possible cause of the Notes error. Etc..
This problem is cleared if I delete the .NSF file that was originall created but I obviously need a permanent solution.
Please help, I cant stand notes, I need my outlook :)
Neil.

Hi,
I’ve now got things working using the IBM connector as reccomended in an earlier post, but in doing this it has answered a few queries above re *.pst files so I though I’d give a follow up.
This connector does transfer mail to a .pst outlook file
Neil.

Hi,
I still have problems with the connector. I coudn’t find the hotfixes installed for office so I reinstalled it, and reinstalled the connector. After that I was able to connect to the domino server and download my mails. So far so good :). But after I close the outlook and open it again the same error “Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists” keeps going and I can’t connect to the server anymore.
Does anyone knows how to fix it?
Ortal.

As someone that has been frustrated w/ Notes for a long time, it has been great to leverage Outlook via the Connector.
However, I have an issue that I’m wondering if anyone on this board has experienced and, more importantly, has a solution to propose…
First, my experience is that when I receive a meeting invite through the Connector into Outlook, if I accept it, eventually I’ll have two identical appointments in my Outlook calendar. My sense is that when I accept, the first instance is populated into my Outlook calendar. Then, when the Connector syncs Outlook with Lotus Notes, an entry is populated in my Notes calendar, which somehow then creates a second instance of the meeting in my Outlook calendar. On top of that, if I delete one of the two identical entires in Outlook, the Connector eventually syncs w/ Notes, Notes deletes the single entry in its calendar, and then the Connector eventually syncs back w/ Outlook and deletes the second instance of the Outlook calendar entry. Net, I either have to live w/ two idential meeting entries in Outlook or none. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Connector works with Notes 5.x and 6.x. I’m on Notes 7.x. Any word on a 7.x connector? Will the existing connector work?
February 15th, 2007 at 4:46 am
I am using it with Notes 7. It works most of the time. But sometimes I have to reinstall it. My routine is:
1. Uninstall Outlook Hotfixex, as pointed out above
2. If reinstalling - delete earlier profiles and .nst data files from the outlook folders
3. Disable Norton Anti Virus/ Internet Security / Desktop search tools (X1, MSN…) before installing Outlook connector.
4. Install connector, but do not select the option for starting the application
5. Cretate a new Outlook profile and new account using Microsfot Outlook Connector, as specified above, and choose a new .nst data file
6. Ensure you are connected to Internet or network before starting the Outlook
7. Start the Outlook with the new profile, and you should be seeing your mails
8. Enable NAV/NIS.
9. Start Desktop engines but ensure Outlook connector Notes profile (or .nst folder) is excluded from search (otherwise Outlook connector keeps crashing)
10. Reapply Outlook Hotfixes…

Before I do anything I shouldn’t do according to my company ; will this process work with Outlook Express?
February 15th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I am new to Notes and so looking around at what options are available to get me back into the Outlook comfort zone. I seem to be missing the point though with this connector. As I see it you need to install Notes first then install Outlook. This seems like a duplication of both software and costs associated with the licenses so you are gaining a better UI but it is costing you the same as it would for notes plus the outllook client cost.
February 17th, 2007 at 2:36 am
How do you determine the exact spelling of the Company name used in Lotus Notes that when you create the initial connector settings it will connect properly?
February 17th, 2007 at 11:33 pm
Hi folks,
I repaired my Outlook installation and my Lotus notes connection stopped working.
My original installation was the connector under Outlook 2002. Office was then upgraded to 2003, and this Lotus connection was retained.
When trying to reconnect to Lotus Notes, I tried all of the great information shared above without success.
Eventually the following worked:
1. Delete my pocket pc partnership with this computer
2. Uninstall the Outlook to Lotus Notes Connector.
3. Placed everything in Document & Settings/User/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook in a new folder for back up, and emptied folder.
4. Uninstalled Office (this drastic step was taken because removing hotfixes suggested elswhere brought no joy).
5. Reboot
6 Kept Lotus Notes installation.
7. Found file: \Documents and Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data with my lotus user name and .id extension.
8. Opened [lotususername].id in notepad and searched text for the following: “CN=”, then “OU=” and then “O=”. Wrote down the values that equaled those codes which mean User Name, Organization Unit and Organization.
9. Reinstalled Office 2003 from disk.
10. Installed outlook connector and entered User Name and Organization name found in [lotususername].id when prompted.
11. Ran Outlook and added new email account per these steps: “Start Outlook up. Select E-Mail Accounts… from the Tools menu. Select Add a new email account, click next, and select Additional Server Types and click next again. Depending on your configuration, you’ll be presented with several server type options. We want Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for IBM Lotus Notes Domino. Click next. You’ll now be prompted to exit Outlook before the new account will be active.”
12. Open Lotus Notes and wait until database replication is complete.
13. Open Lotus Notes and under File\Security\[enter Lotus Notes password]\USER SECURITY:SECURITY BASICS, I unchecked “Login to Notes using your operating system login”
14. Opened Outlook, entered Lotus Notes Password when prompted for password and checked the “remember password” box.
15. Let Outlook synchronize with Lotus notes for the first time (can take a while).
16. Re-establish Pocket PC partnership.
17. Ran Office/Outlook Service Pack Updates for Office 2003
I hope these steps might help someone.
February 18th, 2007 at 3:47 am
Joseph,
Thanks for posting your detailed list. I’m in the midst of something similar, and your post will be very helpful.
I have a question for you. Does your PocketPC partnership work? Are you using ActiveSync to sync Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks to your PocketPC? My partnership stopped working regularly (it works sometimes) as soon as I started using the Connector. I researched this on the web and learned that ActiveSync does not work if one is using the Connector. So, I’m curious to see what your experience has been.
Thanks, STEVE

Can someone please address the issue of having Outlook taking 20 mins before fully functional? it is downloading everything, everytime, and it is making me crazy. Also, I get meeting reminders as well each time I start Outlook. I dismiss all, and it happens the next time…. thoughts??
Thanks!
March 5th, 2007 at 5:45 am
Paula,
I had this issue as well and was working with a MSFT tech support person to fix it. Since I hadn’t receieve a solution, I decided to try the IBM connector (Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook). I’ll have to say…it works great. It took a few hours to fully replicate, as I have a large mail box, but since then it replicates in seconds. Upon startup, Outlook opens and is immediately ready for use.
I haven’t experienced any negative issues with the IBM product. Hope this helps. STEVE
March 5th, 2007 at 4:43 pm
Thanks Steve, I guess I just need to be patient and let it replicate all the way through. I am not sure if it has something to do with the fact that my company stores emails on the lotus notes servers. I do not think they are downloading to my actual drive. I also have an issue with old calendar reminders showing up each time, even though I click dismiss all, everytime I start up Outlook it pops them up….
Thanks again for the response, hopefully waiting for the full download will help. But call it a gut feeling I don’t think it will. I might have to delete some emails to make this work, but I save everything from work… *sigh*
Have a great week!
Paula

Hi,
I’ve been using outlook 2003 with Lotus Notes 7 client. Synchronising works fine but when sending mail from outlook, the recipients only get a blank mail. The sent mail in my outlook & lotus notes client shows the full content.
Any ideas as to what could be the problem?
April 17th, 2007 at 12:37 am
You are a legend!!! After 2 months its finally fixed!
Just for the record - Lotus sucks and that includes Notes, 123, etc!!! They need to get their act together and revamp the programs to bring them into the 21st Century
April 23rd, 2007 at 5:39 pm
a friend in IT set up my Domino connector. it works just ok. I am considering deleting the email account in Outlook though. The most critical prob is that 20% of the emails are totally blank. No data in lotus, webmail, OR outlook. The path and everything is disappeared. I don’t WANT to delete my domino account b/c searching for emails in outlook is sooo much more efficient in outlook. I haven’t read anything in the post about blank emails.
May 15th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
HI All,
I am having problems with my Outlook 2003 client and I think it is related to the fact I have the connector running because after the initial sync (what a pain) the memory goes crazy and eats up the entire 2.5gb I have and then the system crashes. If I kill Outlook everything runs fine.
I am also having the SVCHOST.EXE issue reported by so many people.
My problems started when I installed MS Live Search with the Outlook component over the weekend. I have removed all that I can find and even the desktop search but nothing is working.
I need to get my Outlook working again. I have considered removing the connector, removing the Outlook security patch, rebooting and then installing the connector again. Does anyone have any idea if that is worth while or if it has a chance to fixing things?
I am looking for any ideas you very smart people out there may have. Since I moved into a management position, I don’t seem to have the technical capabilties, or mindset, that I once had…. *sigh*
Thanks,
Perry J

Hi all
I think that the outlook connector is one of the most useful programs I’ve ever used.
Anyway, I have the following problem: When I read a message coming from out of my organization, my account is sending out a blank message. I don’t know if this is a connector’s bug of there is a problem in the lotus server. Anyway, some customers have already complained about my blanks messages.
I’m running windows xp pro sp2, outlook 2003 sp2, lotus notes 6.5.3 and outlook connector 2.0.4007.0.
Anyone facing the same problem? Any suggest?
June 27th, 2007 at 3:49 pm
thanks for this post!
I’ve been using an IBM product called Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook (DAMO in short) which has the same effect, but has one disadvantage.
DAMO is acting as a mirror of the lotus email file, so what ever email is being saved the the current profile (same PST file) is also going to be copied over to the lotus file, which is a big problem for me since I’m using the same outlook profile for other emails too and would want it to show up in outlook.
before i try this Microsoft product, can you tell me if it will keep the emails separate (not copying it over to lotus)?
June 28th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
Why does lotus notes still have to be open when I am using this tool? Whenever I try to open Outlook without having lotus notes open, I get an error message that says “Your ID file can’t be opened. Start the Lotus Notes client, configure your account, and then start Outlook Connector for Domino.”
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
July 3rd, 2007 at 1:42 pm
In response to post 145, I believe the problem is that some people use clients that can’t handle Rich Text or HTML messages or can’t handle certain fonts within those messages. Try sending your message as Plain Text to those people who previously reported seeing a blank message and see if they receive that OK.

You are seriously awesome!
Worked perfectly just as you said, now its time to update my Microsoft Office.
Seriously appreciate the tutorial and information. No more Lotus Notes Email making 5 trips to the server on HUGE files. This will definitely save me time! Thank you!!!!

I am using Lotus 6.x and Office 2007…I am running fine with the DAMO outlook connector after creating a MAPI profile for myself.
The only problem that I face is that whatever mails I sent through outlook do not get saved on the sent items on the server and I am not able to see them either in webmail or lotus except Outlook.
Its my office computer and runs on Win XP SP2…anybody who can help on this???

Thanks in advance

what about calendar issues? I’ve got Outlook 2003, connecting to a Notes 6 domino server. Any time I accept an invitation, I end up with two entries in my calendar for that meeting… Anyone else come across this?
Any work-arounds or fixes?

I have had to rebuild my machine & am now unable to get the connector to work.
I have XP SP2 & Office 2003 with no updates loaded. When installing the connector I get all the expected screens & choices confiming the Notes user id filke etc. & asking for the user password.
I am however unable to open the mail file in Outlook, amessage that the mailbox cannot be accessed occurs.
Any suggestions would be appreciated as I am now being forced to use the Notes client - yuk, yuk, yuk
Thanks in advance

I have been using the outlook connector for a while now by first reading it on this post. The reason the connector takes a lot of time (upto 20 mins…as some have mentioned) is if you leave emails/contacts/calendar items on the domino server. What I have done is setup an outlook rule to move all emails arriving in my domino inbox to a personal folder inbox. This way the domino inbox stays clean (no emails) and the next sync is blazing fast.
Also to ensure that the sent items on domino stay clean, I again use rules to move a copy into the sent folders of my personal folder sent items, and unchecked the option to save emails in sent items (on the domino mailbox).
There are occations where you cannot afford to not use calendar, but if you do and with lots of items, it will take a while to resync the entire stuff. For the moment I have moved my calendar entries to a personal folder as well. But the only problem is that a reminder does not popup there. So I am still trying to figure this one out. I do not have lots of appointments because I have just switched my job, yes…you guessed it, which uses Lotus domino ;-), and hence can afford to experiment with emails.
The main reason why all this needed to be done is because the mail delivery location does not change. Whenever I tried chanding it to a PST it used to revert to the Domino Mailbox. Anyone found a solution for this?

Swapnil,
I’m currently using the IBM type of connector called DAMO, can you answer me a few questions about the one you are using (MS):
1. is the domino inbox a mirror of the lotus inbox?
2. if you’re getting mail for other sources too (pop) does it come in to the same inbox? and will it then be copied to the Domino Servers file?
your answer will be greatly appreciated by many people :)
Thank You
Chaim

1)I dont know what you mean by mirror but I can tell you that any message on the lotus inbox will appear after syncronization on your domino inbox.
2) The mail I get from my hotmail account appears in a different inbox and is not copied to the Domino server.

Thread 135 by Joseph really helps. I follow his every step (except I did not uninstall office but uninstall all the hotfix related to outlook 2003) and now I can use outlook for Lotus notes, and use activesync to sync with my wm5 handheld. I am really happy with this setup. Thanks again Joseph, Bravo!
It took a while for the first time to sync outlook with Lotus, it is acceptable. However, I now notice that each day when I open outlook, it takes 5-10 minutes for outlook to sync with LN calendar before sync email. Any thoughts? (either disable sync calendar or put this sync after other sync)

Regarding my post on Sep 4, where I could not get the Domino mailbox to connect, I am now back up & running on Outlook - yay!!!!!!!!
The solution for me was to install the all the Office updates & then remove them (go figure). Once doning this, I removed the connector & .nsf file. Reinstalled the connector & Outlook could then opened the Notes file without any issues.
Hope this is of some use to anyone having a problem opening the Notes database.

Swapnil,
Thank You, your answer is like a million dollars to me :)
Our company requires me to use their Lotus Domino for my email and currently I’m using Outlook as the client via the IBM DAMO connector, the greatest disadvantage is that my emails of my other pop accounts get also copied to the Domino server, which is undesirable to me.
so having your answer, i’ll definitely give it a try (the Microsoft connector).
Thanks again!

Muchas gracias!!

I’ve been using the Notes connector for 6+ months on multiple machines, with very little trouble. Notes version is now 7.0.2, Outlook 2003, XP Pro. I’m also synchronizing w/ my Pocket PC (WM5) Outlook (Calendar, Contacts, Tasks only) via ActiveSync 4.5.
The two things I’ve noted are:
1. Calendar entries sometimes get duplicated (as mentioned by Steve earlier)
2. I can’t access the Notes directory from Outlook (though the ‘check names’ function works, if I spell the name correctly).
These two items are only mildly frustrating considering the gain.
After reading the posts here, a tip I can share to those who say their synchronization takes a very long time:
BEFORE starting the Outlook connector install / setup process, clean out your Lotus mailbox the best you can (you don’t have to empty it). By clean out, I mean get rid of old emails you don’t need, especially large ones. THEN install and setup as described here, and on your first synchronization…be patient. I left mine running when I left for the day.
If you get impatient and shut down Outlook before it completes this first synchronization, it seems to start the entire synchro process over again the next time you launch Outlook. Since this process takes a long time (~2 hours for me), you get in a scenario where this will happen again and again, depending on your PC use habit. Once the initial synchro process is allowed to complete, the daily synchro process should only take 30-45 sec, if that.
Thanks for the great page and posts…good luck.

I’m having trouble getting this to work… after installing the connector when I launch outlook i get this message:
“Unable to open your default e-mail folders. An unexpected error has occurred. MAPI was ubable to load the information service nwnsp.dll. Be sure that the service is correctly installed and configured.”
Not sure what to do.. I checked for the hotfixes and don’t seem to have the ones that cause trouble. any suggestions anyone?

Does anyone know if there is a way to disable portions of the Outlook Connector for Lotus Notes ?? I am getting duplicate calendar entries and it is REALLY messing up on repeating entries. I need to disable calendar synchronizatioin between the two systems ( and I don’t really need it anyway ).

I have my problem resolved by setting the notes directory into the PATH variable. Right-Click on My computer—> Advance —>Environment variables, Under User Variable path, add in for example, D:\vs6\Tools;D:\Microsoft Visual Studio\VC98\bin;C:\Notes\
where C:\Notes\ is your notes directory. The semicolon is important here as well. I ran into errors when this semi-colon was missing.

Recently I received a .nsf file from my client. My office uses only microsoft exchange and my client is MS Outlook. I would like to read the .nsf file in my outlook but i do not have any Lotus notes client in my laptop. The outlook connector requires the Lotus client to be installed.
I would appreciate if someone who had this problem manage to find a solution.
Thanks.

I updated software for a portable scanner (NeatReceipts) and now my Outlook connector will not work. I have removed and re-installed outlook and the connector, removed profiles and data files but no joy! I always get the following “The profile is not complete because your Notes.ini file hasn’t been personalied for your e-mail account. Start your lotus notes client and provide your domino derver name and ID file password when prompted by the Client Configuration Wizard and try again”. I have recreated the notes.ini file as well but no luck. Anyone have any ideas?
November 16th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Hey all - ran into many of the same issues that most are running into including:
- notes.ini file not complete
- profile not complete
- Outlook connecter can’t load
- and a few others…
Turns out that the Outlook Connector for Domino requires DLL’s that are in the Lotus Notes client directories. If you add the path to the Notes Client (in my case c:\lotus\notes) to your environment path (My Computer\Properties\Advanced\Environment Variables for XP) - things start working right away.
I’d hazzad a guess that this is the case for a lot of these issues.
Thanks!

Love your work…
It was the HOTFIX causing the issue… Highly recommend uninstalling Office, reinstall (without service pack) install domino connector, setup… PRESTO
I had a stab a few months ago and gave up untill another colleague got it working on his… thought it could of been a domino admin thing, but nup that silly hotfix was causing the problem..
DELETE THE OUTLOOK HOTFIX if you get “Outlook Connector for Domino unable to open your default folders. the server is not available”

Two weeks back my Notes Connector had become very slow. Incoming mails were slow but outgoing mails took forever. I suspected problems in mail server. For a week I had to use Lotus Notes for sending mails. Finally I found out why, when another program (Anagram) had problem with Outlook and their support helped in resolving it.
I had switched to McAfee from Norton Internet Security. And it appears reference to Norton’s Script Blocker in outlook was not removed by Norton uninstaller, whch was causing problem (http://www.getanagram.com/createdispatch_scrblock_noex.html). I removed it, and Anagram worked again. Along with it, my Notes connecteor started behaving normally.
If you are suffering from same problem after getting rid of Norton - this might be worth trying. But take precaution as it involves changes in Registry.
DM
ps: Yesterday I switched to TrendMicro. NotedConnecer definitely behaved better in McAfee compared to Norton. But TrendMicro appears to be way ahead sofar.

I finally got my Outlook 2003 working with notes connector by starting with a new install and a machine without any Office service packs installed. I have since installed SP2 but have heard rumors that Office SP3 will break the connector. I have also read that it is only a problem when you try and install the connector and once it is working you can go ahead and apply the service pack and it will be OK. Is anyone using Office 2003 and the Lotus notes connector with Office SP3 installed? I am being harassed by my IT dept to install SP3 but I do not want to break my Outlook use with Lotus notes.

Hi
I downloaded the connector and installed it. There are no Hotfixes installed in my PC. I am still getting the error, unable to connect to server. Check your network connection and try again. I am able to access notes without changing any setting or what ever parallely. And when i click on OK, i get another error pops up. Unable to open default folders. contact administrator. Some one please help me and tell me the process for getting this connector to work.

An issue with functionality.
Is there a way to get the connector to automatically download all attachments when it syncs? It is frustrating to send/recive email before i leave in the morning, open it up later and realize there is an attachment i need to look at. It will not download the attachments untill i actually open them.
Any way to configure this setting someplace? the “download headers and then full items” does not do anything with regard to this.

Can you still use LN with Outlook connector installed? I am concerned that if I don’t get the Outlook interface working that I won’t be able to check emails. Please reply. Thanks for the article.

Just wanted to say thanks again. Everything worked after I uninstalled Outlook and reinstalled without any updates in Vista.
A couple of notes for people wanting to do this without having to put forth as much effort as I had to.
Make sure you have cleaned up from any previous installs before doing anything from the above to eliminate having to do this all over. This means, delete any lotus folders from application data, program data, and program files folder locations.
My Notes version is 6.03 Mutli User Install. I had to install notes again as well and when I did this, I set the Setup.exe file to run as admin and run in XP SP2 compatibility mode. Same with the Notes connector (olconn2.exe). After everthing was setup, I deleted any and all mail profiles that I had created from previous installs. I also deleted everthing is the Outlook Folders under Appdata, local, microsoft, Outlook.
My next step was to install Notes and make sure the defaults were the same as the installation on my old xp sp2 machine. Edit your current location and make sure it equals old install. Make sure your database settings and local preferences also are the same. Dot the is and Cross the ts. After I checked and rechecked, I then installed the connector. I then started Notes and just created local personal folder with no other email first. I closed and restart outlook.
I then proceeded with setting up the Notes Connector Email. Go to Tools, Options -> Mail SetUp Tab and click on Email Accounts. Select Add New Email Account and select the Outlook Connector for Domino. Follow the setup prompts. It will ask you to close Outlook Down and restart - DO NOT DO THIS. I have had nothing but problems if I try this. Just press the send/ Receive button and let Outlook Sync with the Notes DB. You will not be able to see any folder contents until you are synced and have restarted. I hope this helps others. Thanks again for all the info on this site.

Well after spending a complete day in trying to get this to work, the only way was to uninstall Office and reinstall and then install the connector and then set up email again. The problem here was not necessairily that the hotfix stuffed up but that I had in some way mucked up the Notes client. I had already sp3 for office 2003 installed and was working ok until I change the email settings in notes client. Well it is working now so I hope to have no other problems.

hi,
thnx for the solution. It works great.

Fantastic advice… however, the update seems to be now included in Office 2003 SP3 which is not un-installable.
Do you think a manual install of the actual update, then uninstall would work as a means to remove only this fix?
Ah.. I will give it a try and post result here when I know!

I have found the solution:
The forum
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2360592-3.php
had the answer, from Microsoft France!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917326/fr
“Bigchief” posted the following answer:
“Hello.
I found how to fix this bug : you have to add an entry in the registry.
The entry to add is :
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\O utlook\Options\General]
“UnknownRowsSortOrder”=dword:00000001”
Thanks Bigchief, I can’t thanks you on the forum as I am not a member!
So to make it work:
1: regedit and create the key (above)
2: Uninstall Outlook connector for Lotus Notes
3: Re-install Outlook connector for Lotus Notes
4: Create a dummy mail account in “Mail” in control panel
5: Set the dummy as default
6: Delete the previous failed Outlook Connector account (you might need to create a store for this before it allows you to delete it). Exit “Mail”
5: Run Outlook
6: Re-create the Outlook connector account, (in Outlook not control panel)
7: Outlook requests you to use “File -> Exit” to “activate the account”, so exit Outlook
8: Run Outlook again (you will notice that your mail account path makes far more sense now!).
9: Send recieve and you are up and running…. whaaay!!!!

Outlook 2003 security fix KB892843 was a part of Office 2003 SP3 which my company just forced onto my machine. As expected, the connector no longer works and displays the ….server is not available message just like when the patch came out.
Problem is that the SP3 also whacked my NST (nowhere to be found on the machine any longer and the SP3 is not able to be uninstalled. OUCH!!
Any ideas on recovery would be nice, even to start from a new synch to the Notes server. While I wish I could move to Exchange, that is not an option at this employer.

Has anyone figured out how to copy my Notes custom folders (emails in folders) over to Outlook now that the bridge is active? I hate the idea that I might need copy or cut and paste or forward from Notes to Outlook especially since I have 24 custom folders with over 400 emails within those folders sitting on my Notes side!! Please guys, any tips here? Thanks in advance!

In the blogger a connector between Lotus Notes Email and Outlook is referred? Where can I download?
Thank you for your attention.

I previously had the connector functioning, thanks in full to the posts found here. Recently I was provided with a new work laptop, with only the default applications installed and configured. Trying to perform the steps with uninstalling the updates didn’t not work this time for me.
I found the following information that did though, through someones link to the French Microsoft Support site.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917326/fr
This had me up and running without any uninstalls of updates. Running the Olconn2 with Outlook 2003 sp3 on the laptop and Lotus 6.5 on the server.

The Outlook 2003 security fix KB892843 is included in Office 2003 SP3 and this will not allow undo. My company forced the SP3 on us and now the Notes COnnector cannot work.

I have been using Domino notes connector for 2 1/2 years without much issue but suddenly the text of my emails is no longer visible on my companies blackberries unless I send in “plain text” This is very limited and I may have to abandon using Outlook unless someone has a fix. This is also the case with others in my company using Outlook with Domino. There was a server update around the time of this problem starting but the company tells me everything checks out OK and since they don’t support using Outlook I probably won’t get to far. In all other cases HTML or Rich text works and when sent from lotus notes there is no problem. Any Ideas?
February 7th, 2008 at 4:40 pm
I’m running Windows Vista Ultimate, Outlook 2003, and Notes 7.0.2 successfully with the Microsoft connector (just in case anyone is wondering if that works). I did have a fairly significant problem with Outlook “freezing” several times a day, and then when opened again, I would get a message about how Outlook was not shut down correctly and the database had to be checked for corruption. This check would take anywhere from 3-5 minutes. In addition, every time I started Outlook, it would synchronize the entire calendar, which often took 5 minutes. It was done in the background, but usually prevented new emails from coming through until after the calendar sync was complete.
The issue was due to the size of my Notes mail file. I work as a consultant and frequently have to go back to emails from several years prior, so I had emails going back to the year 2000 and a mail file size of over 1.5 GB and over 1,000 calendar entries. I ended up creating a new PST mail folder on my local drive for this Outlook profile, so I have both the Domino mailbox and this new PST mail file within the same Outlook instance. As new email comes in (and don’t forget your sent mail folder, too!), I transfer it to the folders in the PST file.
The advantage to this is that now my Domino mailbox only contains new emails (for a very short time) and 1-2 months worth of calendar entries. Synchronization time is less than 10 seconds, not minutes, and new emails are transferred from Domino to my Outlook box almost instantaneously, rather than up to minutes after they appeared in my Notes mail file. And, Outlook no longer freezes throughout the day. The disadvantage is that my emails are now contained only on my local machine in the PST folder, so it is my responsibility to back up this folder in case something would happen - the emails are no longer safely stored on the corporate mail server. In my opinion, this is a small price to pay for not having to use the Notes interface!
Hopefully this helps someone else out there!

Hi all
I’m trying to do what Swapnil explains in post 156 about rules to automatically move new messages from outlook connector inbox to the personal folder (pst). The problem is that the rule I’m creating doesn’t work automatically each time one mail arrives. Does anyone knows how to set up this rule?
I’m using the connector as default acount so that the mails are always sent with this account and are automatically stored in the pst file, so I don’t need any rule for sent messages, my problem is with the incoming messages.

OK guys, I think this one is along the lines of this thread. Here’s the problem:
I am using Outlook 2003 with a POP3 ISP hosted mail server. I don’t seem to have any problems sending/receiving mail from anyone except a Lotus Notes server. If someone sends me an email from Notes, I receive it fine, and we can go back & forth without a problem. If I inititiate the email, when the person replies, all I get back is what I sent them. Nothing they added comes through. And to make it more interesting, if I log into the webmail interface of my email, the reply is there. It gets ‘lost’ somewhere between the ISP and my laptop. So far, I’ve identified this with 2 different Notes email servers. Any ideas what might be going on???

Apparently you suspected incorrectly, look at the number of posts :-) Man, you are genius!!! :-)

Hi,
Any news or info on Outlook Connector 2007 for Lotus notes ??
May 27th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
If you want to sync you contacts for off line use, from the Tools menu choose Send/Receive and choose the option Download Domino Address Book.
May 27th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Instead of uninstalling the hotfixes, just add the following to your registry
Add a DWORD of “UnknownRowsSortOrder” with a value of 1 to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Options\General

Has anyone tried IBM’s Domino Access for Microsoft Outlook (DAMO)?
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus/library/damo/
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21161211
Outlook Lotus Notes Connector worked fine mostly until I found that when replying to Lotus Notes emails with graphics embeded Outlook was able to display the message just fine but when trying to reply I was getting the message below:
“The message you are sending contains formatted text, an attachment, or both. Only recipints using Outlook will be able to view the attachment and the message in it’s original format. Recipients using other e-mail applications will only be able to view the message in plain text and might not be able to open the attachment
Do you want to send the message anyway? If you select No, you can remove the formatting and the attachment, and then resend the message”.
If I was sending the message anyways the other guy was receving the text version of it. Also, in some other cases some of the new lines weren’t received properly by the recipients.
That’s why I was wondering if anyone used IBMs DAMO - anyone gets a hands on IBM DAMO for Domino 6.5.1, please let me know!

Hi,
I have an old .nsf file, but no Lotus software (took the files from a previous job, but have never used Lotus since). Will this connector allow me to simply open the underlying file? Or does anyone know how I can access the lotus file, using any other software.
I don’t need for the files to be integrated into anything, just want to be able to read them, and extract any attachments etc.
Thanks
Kath

Download a trial version of Lotus Notes and see if you can import the .nsf file.

Assigning tasks to (straight) outlook users?
some people in our office are using outlook through the IBM’s connector (DAMO) to Lotus, and some are using simple outlook (w/ some pop accounts).
so if one DAMO - Outlook user assigns an outlook task to another user w/ the same setup, it works just fine, the task gets created perfect.
but I’m using the simple outlook 2003, and I tried to assign an outlook task to a DAMO - Outlook user, but i did not succeed instead they got a simple email, i tried doing vice versa and got similar results.
My Questions:
1. do you know how to fix it? to be able to assign tasks across the 2 setups?
2. does it work fine by you the using MS connector instead?
Your answers are appreciated.
Thanks Chaim

To those trying to fix outlook connector when receive the message “the profile is not complete because your notes.ini file …”. Well, I tried everything above and FINALLY figure out a solution that worked for me. I deleted my notes.ini file which then triggered to lotus notes to start the configuration wizard. And suddenly, everything was fine again. I also went back to the old outlook connector but I don’t think that had anything to do with it. I also disable Plaxo to limit the possible problems.

SITUATION
I have ten years of archives of Lotus Notes emails. I will want to access many of these in the future. But I will soon leave my current employer and will not have Lotus Notes in the future.
QUESTION 1:
How can I access my archives without Lotus Notes?
COMPLICATION:
My employer tells me there is some sort of “expiration date” on my archives.
QUESTION 2:
Is there such a thing, and is there an over-ride? Or can archives be failed in another format?

You HAVE to ensure that Lotus Notes is set up as your DEFAULT mail client, if it is not, then you will get the message, “Unable to open your default e-mail folders….” The way I figured this out was to go into the notes.ini file and delete everything after the first 6 lines of text, which then brought me back to the configuration set up of Notes. The first time I went into Notes, it told me it was not the default mail client, and did I want to make it the default, I selected “Yes”, to make Notes my default mail client. I then went back into Outlook, and was able to get into it successully (I also selected “No” when it asked if I wanted to make Outlook my default mail client. Thankfully it had only been a day that I had this issue, and if it was not for this forum, I would not have thought about doing anything with the notes.ini file. Hope this fix helps others! :)

As an FYI - I have successfully been using the Outlook Connector (after following all the steps regarding the hotfix issues noted above) with Windows Vista, Lotus Notes 7.x through 8.0x, and Outlook 2003 for the past couple years. However, I had to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 yesterday to support another program (Adobe Creative Suite 4) and now the Connector will not connect to Domino. So, be forewarned that you will have issues with SP1, and in the meantime I will try to resolve them and if successful post a message here.

Post #200 did it for me… added the quick line into Registry, and I’m off and running (back in Outlook)… oh how I hated Notes ever since our IT forced it onto us.. now I have my beloved outlook back, and am soooooo much more efficient again! :)

My wife has a business laptop with a corporate version of Office with service pack 3 installed. I do not have access to the installation CD and only have a personal copy of Office. As I do not want to change her serial I am unable to uninstall service pack 3. I tried reinstalling office but of course I do not have the PRO11N.MSI file, only a PRO11.MSI file. Is there another way to install Outlook Connector even if a bit painful? After already investing 5 hours in research I would hate to give up on this endeavor.
Sad thing is I tried installing this on the home desktop just to try it on another system before messing with my wifes and it worked like a charm after reloading my personal copy of office.

I am unable to uninstall service pack 3 for Office as I do not have the corporate copy of Office for my wifes work laptop. I have tested the Outlook Connector on my home computer and it works fine but of course this is not the computer we need to use it on but it was good for practice. My wife does not feel comfortable asking her IT department for help. Is there anyway to install Outlook Connector or are there any other programs I could try without uninstalling service pack 3. I do not care if it is painful as I have already endured a significant amount of pain in this endeavor to date.

I’m having trouble using the connector.. everything works great.. I am using Outlook (w/connector) on our Notes mail systems.. I can send/receive, no problem.
But when I try to attach a separate mail.. in the past, it would work fine (shows the message as an attachment).. but not it comes up as an undecipherable “.dat”
Any help?
Thanks!
